CALIFORNIA TASTINGS

winefestnews.com

Only a small percentage of visitors to the San Francisco area actually get a change to drive up to Napa and Sonoma or down to the Carmel Valley or even further down to the Central Coast to taste some liquid grape fruit; aka wine. They are probably not on holiday and have to run into the area on business, but they still enjoy exploring wine. What to do? Well, seems like this area is the first to push the yardarm and bring the experience to the city and therefore to you.

Three tasting rooms that come to mind are the Press Club, Winery Collective and Cellar360. The Press Club is located by the Four Seasons Hotel. This urban wine bar is represented by Saintsbury, Mount Eden Vineyards, Miner Family Vineyards, Chateau Montelena Winery, Fritz Winery and one of our old time favorites, Hanna Winery & Vineyards. Sorry to say, Landmark was one of the original participants, but as subsequently pulled out.

A slick looking place that has a gallery and a bite-sized menu not to be missed. Go to their web site and sing up for their mailings so you can catch an upcoming event or even plan to have that next SFO meeting in their private dining room.

One the other side of the spectrum is the Winery Collection. It was the first multi-winery tasting room in the city and houses mostly boutique wineries from many small producers across California.  The location is adjacent to the front door of the Argonaut, so if you’re staying at this fine hotel, a bottle of great wine is just a NY minute away. It seems like something is always going on, so stop by to sample and see if some sort of formalized gathering is planned during your stay.

Famous Ghirardelli Square houses Celler360. You can browse several hundred various wines, all of which are for purchase, or just have a sampling of wines from their tasting menus. Constantly changing menus makes a return visit a nice surprise, each and every time. Heck, you can even join their wine club.
